This is an exceptional little rifle its quality speaks for itself. Vail is well known for his contributions to the firearms industry not only as a gunsmith to the American and Hollywood elite but was also writer and was featured as a top gunsmith by the American Rifleman in the 1950’s and 60’s. The rifle is not signed or marked by the craftsman responsible for the work done, but the consignor reports it to be the work of famed NY gunsmith Roy Vail. The forward scope mount has been additionally tapped and it appears that there was once a lug which attached the barrel to the forearm, but the solder has separated and the lug and mounting screw are no longer present. The scope features a crosshair reticle and is has very good optics. There are no sights but a Weaver K6 riflescope has been mounted to the rear of the receiver and barrel mount. Additionally the stock has swivels set in diamond inlays and a small square shaped brass monogram plate with the initials “GC” along the toe line. The construction is very “Roy Vail-like’ with his signature generous cheekpiece, Vail point-of-comb cross-hatch checkering and pistolgrip. The stock features a horn forend tip, skip-line checkering, a scalloped pattern horn gripcap, left side cheek rest with accent line and a checkered horn buttplate. The custom checkered walnut stock rates very good and has some small dings and a small pyramid shaped repair to the right side of the trigger. The bolt body remains mostly bright and has a chevron style cross-hatch. The Sako Riihimaki receiver, rear of the barrel, bottom metal and base of the detachable magazine have been expertly engraved with foliate patterns that border the factory markings. The metal surfaces retain about 98% of a custom applied blue finish that has some light handling marks and specks of light surface oxidation throughout and minor wear around the muzzle.
